About this product
Topical finasteride has growing trial evidence for androgenetic alopecia. Piraccini and colleagues (JEADV 2022) showed topical finasteride 0.25% spray produces substantially lower systemic absorption than oral finasteride (plasma Cmax more than 100 times lower) and lower, though not absent, systemic DHT suppression (34.5 percent serum DHT reduction versus 55.6 percent with oral finasteride 1 mg over 24 weeks). Those figures describe a 0.25% preparation; our formulations contain finasteride at 0.2% and 0.04%, so systemic exposure would be expected to be lower still, and lower again at the 0.04% strength. Combining it with topical minoxidil in a single bottle improves adherence (one application step rather than two) and addresses both the DHT axis and the follicular cycle. This preparation is a compounded unlicensed special: it is made to order by our partner pharmacy, is not a licensed medicine in the UK, and is prescribed off-label after individual clinical assessment. Although systemic exposure is lower than with oral finasteride, the MHRA Drug Safety Updates on finasteride (29 April 2024 and 11 May 2026) still apply in principle, including the risk of mood changes (including depression and suicidal thoughts) and sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders) which may persist after discontinuation. Local effects (scalp irritation, dryness or contact reactions, often related to the propylene glycol vehicle) are the most common side effects. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle the solution or apply it for the patient, because finasteride can be absorbed through the skin and could affect the development of a male foetus. Tolerability, any concurrent oral therapy, and suitability are reviewed at clinical assessment and at each follow-up, and patients can stop at any time.
How it works
Finasteride applied topically reduces local scalp DHT with minimal systemic absorption. Minoxidil prolongs the anagen phase of the hair follicle and increases follicular size. The combination addresses both the hormonal driver of hair loss and the follicular growth cycle.
