About this product
Finasteride 1 mg daily is the licensed dose for male pattern hair loss and is supported by long-term follow-up data showing maintenance or improvement in scalp hair density in the majority of treated men. It reduces dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone driving follicular miniaturisation in androgenetic alopecia (suppressing serum DHT by approximately 70 percent per the Kaufman 1998 and Drake 1999 trials). Most men tolerate finasteride well. Sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory disorders) and mood-related effects (low mood, anxiety, and in rare cases suicidal thoughts) have been reported. The MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update on 29 April 2024 covering these risks and introduced patient alert cards into finasteride packs alongside updated product information. The MHRA strengthened these warnings further in a Drug Safety Update on 11 May 2026, which also extended precautionary advice to dutasteride. Most side effects resolve on stopping treatment, but sexual dysfunction that may persist after discontinuation has been reported. We review tolerability at each follow-up and patients can stop at any time; any new mood changes or persistent sexual symptoms should be reported promptly. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets because of a small risk of harm to a developing male fetus; the whole, film-coated tablet poses no such risk during normal handling.
How it works
Finasteride is a selective inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase type II, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT in scalp and prostate tissue. Reducing scalp DHT reduces follicular miniaturisation, allowing affected follicles to recover.

- MHRA Drug Safety Update 29 April 2024 and 11 May 2026: risk of psychiatric reactions including depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts; risk of sexual dysfunction (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory disorders) which may persist after discontinuation. Patient alert cards now included in finasteride packs.
- Not licensed for women. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets due to risk of harm to a developing male foetus. Whole film-coated tablets pose no skin-absorption risk during normal handling (Propecia SmPC).
- Stop and seek medical advice if mood changes, suicidal thoughts or new sexual symptoms develop.
