What the regulator says
The MHRA Drug Safety Update of 29 April 2024 explicitly recognises depression as one of the psychiatric reactions linked to finasteride. The 11 May 2026 update strengthened these warnings and extended advice to dutasteride. Patient alert cards in finasteride packs now flag the risk. Yellow Card data cited in the regulator's case review included 281 reports for depressed mood or suicidal behaviour at the time of the original update.
In plain English
Depression while on finasteride is a recognised adverse drug reaction in UK regulatory wording. It is uncommon as a frequency category but real enough that the MHRA mandated patient alert cards and product information updates in 2024 and 2026. Mechanism is not fully understood but finasteride does affect neurosteroid synthesis pathways in the brain.
How long does it last
For most patients, depressive symptoms resolve within weeks of stopping the medication. The MHRA wording specifically acknowledges that in a small number of cases symptoms have been reported to persist after discontinuation. There is no current test that predicts persistence.
What to do if it happens to you
Stop the medication, contact your prescriber and your GP, and consider Yellow Card reporting. Your clinician will help you decide whether to restart at a lower dose or transition to a non-systemic route (topical only), and may signpost to NHS mental-health resources.
