Medication questions Dutasteride

Can you buy dutasteride without a prescription in the UK?

Short answer

No. Dutasteride (Avodart and generic versions) is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, and the law says it may not be sold or supplied except in accordance with a prescription from an appropriate practitioner. The MHRA says websites offering prescription-only medicines without one are acting illegally. Using it for hair loss is off-label, so a prescriber must also explain the risks first.

Key facts

  • Dutasteride is a prescription-only medicine. No UK pharmacy may supply it over the counter.
  • Supplying prescription-only medicines without a valid prescription is a criminal offence (MHRA).
  • Dutasteride is licensed for an enlarged prostate; use for hair loss is off-label and the prescriber takes responsibility for it.
  • Medicines from unregulated sources may be fake, contaminated or wrongly dosed (MHRA).

Dutasteride is prescription-only

The Avodart entry on the eMC, the UK's medicines database, lists it as a prescription-only medicine. Regulation 214 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 says that a person "may not sell or supply a prescription only medicine except in accordance with a prescription" given by an appropriate practitioner, such as a doctor or an independent prescriber. The MHRA, the UK medicines regulator, puts it plainly: "It is a criminal offence to supply prescription only medicines without a valid prescription", and "websites offering them are acting illegally". See our glossary entry on prescription-only medicines.

That applies to the brand (Avodart), generic dutasteride capsules, and any online listing, however it is worded.

Is it legal to get dutasteride online?

Yes, if the route is a lawful one: you have an appropriate consultation with a prescriber who decides it is suitable, they issue a prescription, and a registered pharmacy supplies it. A website that offers dutasteride without asking about your health, or with no named prescriber or pharmacy, is not a legal route. Dutasteride is licensed for an enlarged prostate, which is what the NHS prescribes it for, and it is not an NHS hair loss treatment; see hair loss treatment on the NHS.

Why dutasteride needs a prescriber

Dutasteride is licensed in the UK for an enlarged prostate. Using it for hair loss is off-label, so the prescriber takes responsibility for the decision and must give you enough information about the risks to decide for yourself; see is dutasteride licensed for hair loss.

There is a lot to go through. The Avodart leaflet lists sexual side effects that may continue after you stop, and the MHRA added a precautionary warning on mood in May 2026. It is for men only: women who are or may be pregnant must not handle leaking capsules, and a condom is advised if your partner is or may be pregnant. It lowers the PSA test, and it reduces the amount of semen and may reduce fertility. It also affects blood donation for six months (see dutasteride and blood donation). Our dutasteride side effects guide covers these in turn.

The risks of unregulated sellers

The MHRA warns that "Products sold illegally may be fake, contaminated, incorrectly dosed" and may contain undeclared powerful ingredients. Its advice is: "Do not buy prescription-only medicines without a prescription", and "Only buy medicines from registered UK pharmacies or legitimate retailers". It asks people to report suspicious websites or products through the Yellow Card scheme.

A medicine from an unknown source gives you none of the safeguards above: no one has checked it suits you, you may not know what you are taking, and no one is responsible for following you up if you have a problem. A site that offers dutasteride with no consultation needed is a red flag.

How to check an online service

The doctor: a UK prescriber should be on the GMC register, which you can search at gmc-uk.org.

The pharmacy: in Great Britain, check that the pharmacy that dispenses your medicine is on the GPhC register (pharmacyregulation.org); in Northern Ireland, the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland keeps the register.

The service: online doctor services in England that employ GMC-registered doctors must be registered with the CQC.

The consultation: it should ask about your medical history, medicines and allergies, and explain the risks, not simply take an order. Our guide to what happens in an online hair loss consultation walks through a legitimate one.

At WMG Meds, part of CQC-registered Westminster Medical Group, a GMC-registered doctor reviews your assessment and decides whether any medicine is appropriate. Many people are advised that a different option, or no medicine, suits them better. If you would like a doctor's view, start the free online assessment.

Related questions

Is dutasteride available over the counter in the UK?

No. It is a prescription-only medicine, so a pharmacy can only supply it against a valid prescription.

Is it legal to buy dutasteride online in the UK?

Only through a lawful route: a consultation with a prescriber, a valid prescription and supply by a registered pharmacy. Buying it from a site with no consultation or prescription is not legal.

Can my GP prescribe dutasteride for hair loss?

It is licensed in the UK for an enlarged prostate, which is what the NHS prescribes it for. Prescribing it for hair loss is off-label, and a GP may or may not be willing to do so. The NHS does not list it as a hair loss treatment.

What about buying dutasteride from abroad?

The MHRA warns that medicines from unregulated sources may be fake, contaminated or incorrectly dosed, and says not to buy prescription-only medicines without a prescription. A product you cannot trace gives you no clinical oversight if something goes wrong.

How do I report a suspicious website selling dutasteride?

The MHRA asks people to report suspicious websites or products through the Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.
