Medication questions Minoxidil
Can I use minoxidil once a day?
Short answer
It depends on the product. Most licensed minoxidil scalp products in the UK are directed twice daily, including Regaine for men and the women's 2% solution. The exception is Regaine for Women Once a Day 5% foam, which is licensed for once-daily use. Oral minoxidil is a once-daily tablet. If your minoxidil was prescribed, follow your prescriber's directions.

Key facts
- Regaine for Women Once a Day 5% foam is the only licensed UK minoxidil scalp product directed once daily.
- Regaine for men (solution and foam) and the women's 2% solution are directed twice daily.
- Oral minoxidil is a once-daily tablet, used off-label for hair loss.
- Missed a dose? Carry on as normal; do not double up.
What the licensed directions say
Regaine for Men Extra Strength 5% solution: 1 ml to the affected scalp twice daily, no more than 2 ml a day. The leaflet adds: leave at least 12 hours between each use.
Regaine for Men Extra Strength 5% foam: half a capful (1 g) twice daily. The SmPC says that once regrowth occurs, "twice daily applications are necessary for continued hair growth".
Regaine for Women Regular Strength 2% solution: 1 ml twice daily.
Regaine for Women Once a Day 5% foam: half a capful (1 g) once daily. This is the only licensed UK minoxidil scalp product with once-daily directions, and it is not for men.
Oral minoxidil: a tablet taken once a day, prescribed off-label for hair loss at a dose your doctor sets. See our oral minoxidil page.
What the evidence says about once-daily use
The once-daily evidence comes mainly from trials of the women's 5% foam:
Blume-Peytavi and colleagues, 2011: 113 women with pattern hair loss were randomised to once-daily 5% foam or twice-daily 2% solution for 24 weeks. The once-daily foam met the study's non-inferiority test (meaning it was not shown to be worse by more than a set margin) for hair count, and women using it had lower rates of scalp intolerance such as itching and dandruff. The foam was a propylene glycol-free formulation.
A larger phase III trial, 2016: 322 women used once-daily 5% foam or twice-daily 2% solution for 52 weeks. Both increased hair counts by a similar amount at 24 weeks, but the pre-set non-inferiority goal was not met.
The licensed men's products were tested and licensed at twice-daily use. Using them once a day is outside their directions.
If twice a day is hard to keep up
Many people find a twice-daily routine difficult, and that is worth raising rather than quietly cutting back. A prescriber can consider whether a different product or approach suits your routine better, and can explain what changing frequency might mean for you.
The compounded topical minoxidil that WMG Meds prescribes is applied twice daily unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you would prefer a once-daily option, mention it in the online assessment so the doctor can take it into account.
Missed applications
The Regaine for Men leaflet says that if you miss one or two applications you should carry on as normal, and not use twice as much or twice as often. Overuse makes it more likely that minoxidil gets into the bloodstream, which is what causes side effects such as a fast heartbeat or dizziness. Our guide on stopping topical minoxidil covers longer gaps.

Can men use the women's once-a-day foam?
No. Its SmPC lists use in men as a contraindication, meaning it must not be used by men.
Can I apply minoxidil only at night?
For twice-daily products, the directions are morning and evening, with at least 12 hours between applications for the men's solution. If your minoxidil is prescribed, follow your prescriber's directions and ask them before changing the routine.
Is once-daily use gentler on the scalp?
In the 2011 trial in women, the once-daily 5% foam caused less scalp intolerance than the twice-daily 2% solution, but the foam also had no propylene glycol, so frequency was not the only difference.
What should I do if I miss an application?
Carry on as normal. The Regaine leaflet says not to use twice as much or twice as often to catch up.
Do I need to use minoxidil every day for good?
The NHS says hair loss treatments only work for as long as they are used. Gaps reduce the benefit, and stopping completely leads to the regrown hair being lost over a few months.
