The treatments used for hair loss do not carry the same risks as each other, and you may be considered for one, both, or neither. Please read both of the sections below.

Tablets that work on hormones

Can affect mood and sexual function, including reduced desire, difficulty with erections, and changes to ejaculation. Mood effects can include depression and, rarely, suicidal thoughts. Sexual and mood effects have in some cases continued after stopping.

Minoxidil, as a tablet or applied to the scalp

Applied to the scalp, effects are mostly local: irritation, dryness, or an initial increase in shedding that usually settles within a few weeks. As a tablet, it can affect blood pressure and, rarely, the heart.

A clinician will go through whichever of these applies to you properly, before anything is prescribed. What matters here is that you have seen this.

Hair loss medicines like finasteride, dutasteride and minoxidil are prescription-only and are not licensed for anyone under 18, so we can't prescribe them for you.

Hair loss at your age is worth having looked at properly, because the cause is more often something other than pattern hair loss. Please speak to your GP, who can examine you and refer you to a dermatologist if needed.

If your plan includes finasteride or dutasteride, this will include the MHRA-listed risks (Drug Safety Updates 29 April 2024 and 11 May 2026): mood changes including depression and rarely suicidal thoughts, sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory disorders) and the risk of persistent symptoms after stopping. Finasteride is not licensed for women and women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets, or handle leaking dutasteride capsules.
